Placing a fraud alert entitles you to free copies of your credit reports. (This is separate from the annual free credit reports you are entitled to at www.AnnualCreditReport.com.) Look for inquiries from companies you haven't contacted, accounts you didn't open and debts on your accounts you can't explain.

2. For any accounts that have been fraudulently accessed or opened, call the security department of each affected creditor or financial institution. These accounts should be closed. If a new password needs to be chosen - do not choose your mother's maiden name. Follow up in writing, with copies of supporting documents. Use the ID Theft Affidavit at www.ftc.gov/idtheft to support your written statement. Ask for written verification that the disputed account has been closed and the fraudulent debts discharged. Keep copies of documents and records of your conversations about the theft.

3. File a report with your local police department where the identity theft took place. Retain a copy of the police report in case your bank, credit card company, or others need proof of the crime at a later date.

4. If you believe your mail has been stolen or your address changed without your authorization, contact your local post office and report the theft to the nearest postal inspector.

5. Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Identity Theft Hotline toll-free at 1-877-438-4338; TTY 1-866-653-1261; online at www.ftc.gov/idtheft or by mail to Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC 20580. The FTC puts their information into a consumer fraud database and shares it with law enforcement. You can also get more information on identity theft by checking out the FTC website at www.ftc.gov/idtheft

Please contact 860-823-4906 (Chelsea Groton Bank's Security Department) if you think you may have given sensitive information to an unknown source.
